Nic Kernahan started his life as a solicitor in the country – when he opened Johnston Withers’ Whyalla office in 1994. That rural experience has shaped his practice – giving him wide experience in many aspects of the law; a focus on practical, sensible, cost-effective solutions; and a down to earth nature that his clients love.
Nic moved to the Adelaide office of Johnston Withers in 1997 and became a Director of the firm in 2005. He now heads up the firm’s criminal law practice and is widely regarded as one of the state’s best criminal defence solicitors – with a focus on serious crime and white collar offences.
He also has a specialist expertise in the law as it affects rural families – including issues as diverse as planning for farm succession, asset protection during farming family breakdowns, and litigation involving defective machinery.
Nic represents clients in workplace disputes involving internal investigations and in court. He appears for client before professional disciplinary tribunals. He also has significant experience in inquests and enquiries. He acted as a solicitor assisting the state Coroner in the 2002/3 inquiry into the Whyalla airline crash, in 2007 he assisted Commissioner Mullighan in the State Commission of Inquiry into Children in State Care and he regularly appears in the Coroner’s court.
Nic’s interest in, and love of regional South Australia remains. He carries responsibility for Johnston Withers’ regional offices in Murray Bridge, Whyalla, Port Augusta and Roxby Downs, supporting the local staff there and visiting regularly.
Outside law, Nic has an interest in most sports. A footballer himself, having played in both in country and metropolitan leagues, he has had a long involvement coaching both senior grade football and youth teams. (He counts a number of the current crop of AFL and SANFL players among his protegees.) He serves as a member of the SA Amateur Football tribunal – dealing with disciplinary matters. He also an avid surfer and enjoys reading, fishing and music.
Darcy has been a dynamic member of the Johnston Withers team for over a year. Darcy has a degree in Law and International Studies together with a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice. Darcy is energetic, passionate and looks forward utilising those skills at Johnston Withers.
Darcy is interested in all areas of law, particularly Aboriginal, employment and criminal law. Darcy comes from an impressive legal heritage with his father, Andrew Collett, Barrister a leading Australian Aboriginal law expert. Darcy grew up listening to stories about his father’s ground-breaking work and travelling to remote Aboriginal communities such as Maralinga around the age of 8. These firsthand experiences opened Darcy’s mind to the legal plight of the Aboriginal people and to law in general and gave him an early thirst for justice and knowledge.
A passionate South Australian, Darcy has always maintained a strong connection to the country. School holidays were spent working on his mother’s family farm in Keith and many a long summer helping on the family vineyard in McLaren Vale.
Down to earth and relaxed, Darcy loves his footy and travelling both overseas and within Australia. Darcy, is a dedicated ambassador and fundraiser for Brain Cancer Research and Awareness. He recently joined his cousins and friends in the Ride for Rhonda (grueling bike ride from Melbourne to Adelaide) charity event that saw the everyday heroes raising over $100,000 for brain cancer research.

Jess has always had a passion for property. After being exposed to Conveyancing in a Law Firm in Victoria in 2001, she quickly realised this would be a wonderful career for her.
Wanting to return to her home state she enrolled and completed her Conveyancing Diploma in 2005. During this period she worked for Developers in Victoria as well as Law Firms and swiftly became an integral part of Marshall Conveyancing in 2006.
Jess acquired Marshall Conveyancing in September 2009 and until 2017 she ran the business with passion and drive. In 2017 when the opportunity came up to partner with a firm that had the same values as me – Community, Social Justice, Outstanding customer service, the only answer was YES. Knowing the Marshalls legacy would continue was of great comfort, and Jess works with Johnston Withers to assist in marketing, and operations in the Murraylands. Jess is using her “extra” time to complete her degree in marketing which she commenced in 2015. Jess is also the Vice President of the Australian Institute of Conveyancers (SA) Division and continues to use this platform to raise the professional standard of the industry and to give back to the industry that has given her so much.
